Why Would Optimizing Existing Content Result In Poor SERP Rankings?

So, you finally decided to take your website's search engine optimization seriously and make an overhaul to your on-page optimization... but have yet to see any positive impact from it. In fact, you're seeing your rankings fall from previous spots – and it is very, very frustrating.

If the above applies to you, first we recommend taking a deep breath. Now that is out of the way, know that you aren't alone and that there could be several reasons as to why this is happening. (And yes, we agree – it is very aggravating!)

Providing specific insights is challenging without having any information on the business or brand, but before getting too upset, we urge you to keep the following key points in mind:

1. Most people have an outdated understanding of Google's search engine results pages. The addition of Google Instant and the fact that the user's previous history and IP address are taken into account when displaying results have been absolutely GAME CHANGING as far as search is concerned. In plain English, that means that what is included on each page varies for every person based on those factors and therefore varies (at least slightly) for each user. As such, there is no such thing as "normal" rankings anymore.

2. With all of that aside, ebbs and flows in Google's results pages is totally normal and can be impacted by a ton of different things from seasonality to algorithm changes. Sometimes, it has nothing to do with you, your brand and its content.

3. It is also common to see negative data metrics for a few months after launching a new website, and this applies to freshly optimized content as well (especially if it existed as it previously was for a significant amount of time). Just like it takes some time to build a new or refreshed reputation in real life, the search engines need a moment to process new information as well.

Often times rankings or traffic dips after revitalizing content or launching a new website simply because Google's indexing robots are busy reviewing your content and applying value to it. (And that can take some time to complete. For more on that, see our other blog post here.) Do your best to stay patient and keep your eye on your analytics for any other trends, either positive or negative.

With all of that being said, we encourage you not to freak out so soon after implementing fundamental changes. If the falling metrics continue after 3-4 months, then it is time to look into potential reasons for the negative trend. Some common causes our marketing agency has encountered include:

-Did you mess up your navigation architecture?
-Are you keyword stuffing?
-Did you submit a sitemap to Google Search Console?
-Do you have an internal linking strategy?
-Is your writing quality complete garbage?

Whether the reason for your poor SERP rankings are a combination of the above points or none of the above, the important thing is to remember that effective SEO doesn't appear instantly overnight. Instead, it is a process that takes care and attention to detail to perfect. (It doesn't have to be done all at once, either!)

Make sure to carefully test and pay close attention to your metrics in coming months to determine what is really going on with your company's digital marketing. And of course, if all else fails, contact the marketing experts at District Maven to develop a winning strategy and guide you through it.
