July 13, 2023 | 2:30 pmMeet NotebookLM: Google's New AI Assistant
July 13, 2023 | 2:30 pmEveryone is seemingly jumping head first into the AI game these days, and this week Google decided to throw their hat (or, tech) into the ring. Despite being in the works for some time, the search engine giant finally publicly launched its newest offering, NotebookLM. The developers want you to consider it a “virtual research assistant” with the ability to quickly “summarize facts, explain complex ideas and brainstorm new connections – all based on sources you select.”
According to Google, the AI-driven platform was designed to help people make faster connections and well-informed decisions based on data that actually matters to them.
“We know people are struggling with the rapid growth of information — it's everywhere and it’s overwhelming. As we've been talking with students, professors and knowledge workers, one of the biggest challenges is synthesizing facts and ideas from multiple sources. You often have the sources you want, but it's time consuming to make the connections.”

What Makes This Any Different Than Other AI Tools?
Google believes the key thing that makes NotebookLM stand out is its ability to “ground” itself within specific files, folders and other items hosted throughout the Google Suite. (Currently Google Docs is the only G-Suite app that can “grounded” with this tool, but others will be released soon.)
What Can Notebook LM Actually Do?
Once you’ve selected your Google Docs, there are three primary things that can be done within the NotebookLM platform:
1. Upload Overview – Automatically create an in-depth summary of the doc(s) that outlines important questions and items for discussion to help users gain a deeper understanding of the results.
2. Question & Answer – Ability to answer questions pertaining to Google Docs that have been uploaded to NotebookLM.
3. Brainstorm Ideas – Like other AI resources out there, this one will also assist users in generating creative thoughts and ideas, based on the information in the uploaded documents. Or in other words, NotebookLM helps one to see possibilities in places they couldn’t before.
Final Thoughts On NotebookLM
While I wasn’t expecting NotebookLM to be anything groundbreaking, there is no denying that their innovative concept of “grounding” is really, really cool. Despite this, it’s important to remember to always fact-check AI-generated responses to ensure you’re getting the most accurate information.
While only time will tell how successful this tool will be, at least developers are taking the fine-tuning process seriously. Their post on the matter concludes by reaffirming their commitment to developing AI responsibly (you can read their AI Principles here), as well as learning and building along side the user.Interested in giving NotebookLM a try for yourself?
