Why Adaptability in Web and Mobile Design is So Important

Many factors go into designing an app or website: experience, interface, color palette– you name it. But have you ever wondered the intent behind the design?

For our Design and Creative Assistant, Lindsay Silverman, the ability is something that she has thought about often. Having a sister with special needs, she has constantly been on the lookout for adaptive options in the design world. She felt something was missing, and suddenly one day, it clicked: An app for adaptive fashion brands.

“I have always been inspired by my sister, and fascinated by her ability to adapt to an app on the iPad or iTouch quicker than anything else. Having dexterity issues, it has always been difficult for my family and I to find clothing she is able to put on herself. So I thought, why not combine the two."

And thus, Adaptiv was born. Adaptiv (get the pun?) is a mobile application to provide fashion options for those with disabilities. It includes a variety of categories, from casual wear to swim or accessories to medical wear. You can search in-app for brands, and the app is designed with ability in mind.

"We're still in the prototyping phase right now, but we have made sure to include all of the elements of mobile application design that are most important," Lindsay elaborates.

Adaptive clothing is anything designed for people with physical disabilities, who may experience difficulty dressing themselves (Thanks, Wikipedia). These adaptations may include things like magnetic closures, double zippers, or wide sizing.

"The goal of the app is to create a space where those with disabilities can feel heard, valued, and thought of. Not only does the content and copy reflect that, but its design as well."

Lindsay Silverman

The main goal of Adaptiv is to provide a seamless user experience and create a sense of ease while using the app. Categories are clearly identified, typefaces are clean and legible, and the color palette is easy on the eye.

Here are the main features of the application, and why they are important for all design:

Adaptiv is genuinely a creation stemming from life experience and a dream Lindsay has always had. Her skills allowed her to devise a strategy for a functional and practical application for those with disabilities. She looks forward to the possibility of working to develop the app even further and maybe someday code it to life.
